In this case study, Tanner Tattini, CMO of Ella’s Bubbles, tells us how they use WooCommerce Product Add-Ons to sell customised luxury bathtubs.

Can you tell us about yourself and the story of how you started your company?

Ella’s Bubbles is a Walk In Bathtub Company founded in 2005 on the basis of an Aging in Place model. Allowing seniors, disabled, or even the luxurious conveniently to bathe safely in an experience not offered by any other bathtub on the market.

Our devotion to a fair pricing structure and custom unique design has labeled Ella’s Bubbles as a Top Voted Walk In Tub in the bathroom and Aging in Place industry. With a Chicago Illinois Warehouse, where each Walk In Tub is Designed, Assembled, Tested – we continue to innovate new products each year like our Two Seat Walk In Tub and Bariatric/Athletic ShaK models. It is a pleasure to provide a necessity product on fair and honest values to those in need.

Could you give some information about how you built your site?

The Ella’s Bubbles Walk In Tub website was built with the intention of overall convenience with a diverse team of all skillsets. Using WordPress as our mainframe has facilitated web-change convenience and allows each team member to make their own approved change.

For example, our photographers can update images, our content writers can publish their own blogs, and even our sales team can adjust product descriptions. The theme is extensively modified with the use of multiple developers, custom plugins, and server-sided language. Altogether, WordPress allows our Walk In Tub delivery to remain ‘easy to pivot’ in a critical market

What made you choose Product Add-Ons Ultimate?

Although WordPress is a great framework, and the knowledge of our developers is highly extensive – sometimes a little bit of R&D will highlight that an alternative team of knowledgeable developers have already created exactly what you are looking for!

This was the case with Product Add-Ons Ultimate. Walk In Bathtubs are a highly variable product, with thousands of SKUs even with just 28+ unique models. With all of this variation, our team needed more flexibility in regards to product additions – and the team at Product Add-Ons Ultimate went above and beyond in all directions while creating this plugin. A few details I was seeking were:

  • Can I add images or descriptions once the user selects an option
  • Can I tie a unique price based on conditional logic
  • Are other plugins compatible such as “Share Cart”

And the answers were all Yes!

Can you provide some details on how you use Add-Ons Ultimate?

Ella’s Bubbles is currently using Product Add-Ons Ultimate for our Walk In Tub pages. For instance, our Elite Walk In Bathtub is a great seller with a Stainless Steel Door. We use the default WooCommerce variations to allow the customer to choose their Jetting/Door/Faucet Options. Then, we combine Product Add-Ons Ultimate to offer Optional Features in a very luxurious manner to the customer. This can be seen demoed on this page.

Notice how when an option is selected and included, we present the user with a “rewarding” experience of an image/description display. The price is also discrete until the user engages the dropdown. There are many creative and ‘playful’ opportunities that can easily be implemented with this plugin.

How did you find the experience of using the plugin?

The experience of using Product Add-Ons Ultimate for Ella Walk In Tubs has been convenient, easy, flexible, and luxurious! A plugin that truly pushes all limitations, and grants capability to the web team to be as efficient and creative as they please!

Were there any features you found particularly useful?

Conditional logic is a great addition that pushes the limits and breaks the barriers of normal product add-on plugins. With conditional logic, Ella’s Bubbles was able to build custom Walk In Tub add-on functionality such as the image/description info blocks that display after the customer chooses to include an item.

It is also important to acknowledge that the support of this plugin feels like family. Any advice that I share is implemented almost instantaneously as the developer team is clearly committed to offering the ‘all in one’ Product Add-Ons plugin.

Can you share any results or metrics since using the plugin?

Previously, the inclusion of add-ons was simply not an option when checking out at Ella’s Bubbles. Rather, the customer would be called and offered additional add-ons after their purchase – which of course created additional tasks and an inconvenient process of additional billing. Not to mention, this inconvenience can easily discourage the customer from investing further.

Product Add-Ons Ultimate is responsible for the inclusion of thousands of Walk In Tub Add-Ons since implementation, and likely thousands of hours granted back to our Order Processing team.

What are the next steps for your business?

The next steps of our business are to continue expansion with peace of mind that our Ella Walk In Tub product pages are under control and luxuriously simplified with Product Add-Ons Ultimate.

In our latest case study, we chat with Kalem and Joe, aka the Bonbon Boys: a Dorset-based duo with a passion for confectionery and who deliver boxes of tasty Pick ‘n’ Mix directly to your door.

They are also passionate about the environment, using recyclable or biodegradable packaging where possible and for each sale of their Retro Box, they make a donation to the charity WasteAid.

Can you tell us about yourself and the story of how you started your company?

The Bonbon Boys was born out of the UK nationwide lockdown when Pick ’n’ Mix was all but a sealed off set of containers in most supermarkets. As two sweet lovers who, as a result of having nothing to do and no one to see, had a lot of time on their hands, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to satisfy the nation’s cravings for traditional Pick ’n’ Mix.

We’re two young, Dorset-based guys who have a passion for business, branding and sweets so it seemed like the perfect time and idea to start creating boxes of sweets and shipping them all across the country to maintain the needs of sweet teeth across the land.

How did you go about building your site?

We had a couple of options when it came to building a website. Shopify is a very popular eCommerce platform but the pricing model didn’t work for us.

As someone who has a limited knowledge of WordPress, HTML and PHP, I wanted full control over the look, feel and functionality of the website so I chose WooCommerce and got to work.

I’m no good at expert coding or theme building so I used an off-the-shelf theme, Avada, from ThemeForest and customised it to my liking. As time has gone on, we’ve purchased a few plugins to extend the capabilities and functionality of the website to make it more customer friendly and more suitable for our fairly unique model.

Because we offer local deliveries as well as nationwide courier shipping, this means that things have to work a little differently.

Why did you choose Product Add-Ons Ultimate?

We had been looking for a component/combo builder for a while when tampering with the idea of allowing our customers to choose their own items for their own uniquely made Pick ’n’ Mix. Unfortunately, as a business, we’re just not ready for that yet so we shelved it but we’d looked at a few options then.

Then we decided to start offering upsells in the form of nicely designed gift cards and we needed a plugin to satisfy that need. I had done a lot of research on the options and none seemed to be built with as much quality and care as Product Add-Ons Ultimate.

It ticked every box in terms of allowing an image swatch of options whilst adding the price to the item total. It also allowed us to create custom products and have these as add-ons so we can track their sales performance.

We also have custom packing slips that are automatically printed when an order comes in and the plugin works with this seamlessly.

How are you using the plugin?

It allows us to upsell and enhance our product offerings. If someone wants to send a birthday gift to a friend who they can’t see due to nationwide coronavirus restrictions, they can add a cute little personalised ‘Happy Birthday’ gift card to their order to show how much they’re thinking about them.

It adds a unique touch to gifts and also gives us scope to have other add-ons in the future, be they in the form of literature (as the gift messages) or more exciting things like extra sweets!

How did you find the experience of using the plugin?

Very straightforward to set up! I practically had it working within 15 minutes. It’s written and developed clearly with great explanations of each feature so you can be informed on how turning on one setting might affect another.

Were there any features you found particularly useful?

We love the image swatch feature where you can display a preview of what the add-on will look like. I also love how you can group fields so that they form part of a bank of questions so it’s clear to the customer that they relate to each other.

Can you share any results or metrics since using the plugin?

The uptake in gift card sales have been phenomenal. Something that we thought would actually be very 50/50 and a risk, but it paid off, and I think that’s largely thanks to how the plugin makes it easy to add to baskets. Prior to launching the gift cards, we used to offer free gift cards, and now we’ve seen sales increase.

What are the next steps for the Bonbon Boys?

We’re constantly trying to come up with new themed Pick ’n’ Mix boxes and product ideas. We want our products to represent value and sweets that you wouldn’t necessarily find on the shelf or with other online Pick ’n’ Mix suppliers.

We don’t just want to become an online sweet shop, we want our products to feel good quality and unique. With that in mind, we have just launched our Easter range and are now moving onto plans for some exciting new concepts for Summer.

In this latest case study, I spoke with Billy from BC Bud Supply who supply cannabis, CBD, vapes and other related products online. They’re based in British Columbia, Canada, where cannabis is legal for both medical and recreational purposes.

Selling CBD and cannabis products with WooCommerce

First, let’s look at some of the background to selling CBD and cannabidiol products online with WooCommerce.

WooCommerce is open source software so there’s no limitation on what you can sell with it – provided it’s legal for you to do so.

However, there are some considerations you’ll need to take into account:

Payment processors for CBD

If you’re in the US, you’ll need to use Square as your payment provider. There’s more information on Square’s CBD solution here.

Outside the US, you’ll need to do some research. Bitcoin / crypto payment gateways are one option and you can find several free plugins on the WordPress directory, including this one.

Interview with Billy from BC Bud Supply

BC Bud Supply WooCommerce website selling CBD and cannabis online

I asked Billy about his website in general, some of the challenges selling CBD online, and why he chose to use the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

Can you tell us about yourself and give us some background on your company and what you do?

We are a mail order marijuana business based in Canada where cannabis was legalized in 2018. We are based out of British Columbia, Canada, which has a long history with the plant and is home to some of the best cannabis on the planet.

We sell a wide selection of cannabis flowers, edibles, concentrates and vapes to consumers throughout the country.

Are you restricted by any technical limitations, e.g. hosting, payment processors, etc, because of your business?

There are payment processors such as Square, PayPal that will not work with our industry but we have smaller alternative payment networks we work with and we also accept Bitcoins.

Could you give some information about how you built your site: for example, did you build it yourself or use a developer, did you use a theme or build something custom?

Our team built our site in house using WordPress, and yes we are using a theme (Flatsome).

What made you choose to use the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin?

We wanted to allow customers to buy multiple cannabis strains of their choosing in a discounted bundle. We experimented with several different WordPress plugins that added in this functionality, and Add-Ons Ultimate was hands down the best choice for the job.

The interface it provided the customer for the strain selection was far superior to the other plugins, and it offered the most amount of options on the backend for us to configure it to get the exact functionality we needed.

Can you provide some details on how you use Add-Ons Ultimate?

We use Add-Ons Ultimate to create bundle products that we call our Mix & Match Bundles.

Customers can choose from up to four different cannabis flowers to add to their bundle using a dropdown field interface.

How did you find the experience of using the plugin?

We had a good overall experience using the plugin. At the beginning it can be a bit overwhelming with all the different settings, but the plugin has a clean and well organized interface along with great documentation and support, which helped tremendously.

Once you get the basics of the plugin, its becomes a breeze to use.

Can you share any results or metrics since using the plugin?

We have quite a big selection of cannabis strains on our store. Adding the discounted Mix & Match Bundles definitely added a boost to our sales as it allows our customers to sample multiple strains without having to pay the full price for each strain.

What are the next steps for your business?

We have built up a reputation for providing some of the best cannabis products available, along with great customer service.

We have a solid foundation and a strong customer base, and our next steps for the business are focused on just scaling and trying to reach new customers.

Is there anything else we should know?

If you’re looking to create bundle or allow customization on products, the Add-Ons Ultimate plugin is the best way to go in our opinion.

We have tried several other plugins such as YITH Product Bundles, WPC Product Bundles and Product Bundles from Woocommerce.com, but none of them offer the vast array of features and customization that Add-Ons Ultimate comes with.

Setting up your own CBD store in WooCommerce

If you’d like to follow BC Bud Supply’s example, you can create your own CBD and cannabis products store in WooCommerce. For creating bundles and mix and match products, you’ll need the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin.

In this case study I speak to Vivian Edel, the Munich based founder and creative mind behind BAGS & PIECES who sell DIY boxes containing everything you need to make your own leather handbag and accessories. No previous knowledge or even a sewing machine is needed. Just the desire and a little time to get creative. The end product is a unique piece that nobody else owns – handmade by you.

Can you tell us about yourself and the story of how you started your company?

Like many of my customers, I simply love all things Do-It-Yourself and crafts. I own an events and conferences management agency by day but have been sewing and crafting nearly every minute of my free time.

I have always been interested in fashion and always wanted to own a great luxury handbag. However, while in college and university I could not afford one. Then, after some time of being in business, I finally bought myself the handbag I was dreaming of.

However, when I looked at it closely, I realized that it was not complicated in terms of construction. And that’s when the thought came into my mind – maybe I could do this myself.

And that is how I got into leathercraft. I spent years consuming the content that was out there to learn how to craft beautiful and professional looking leather accessories and after a while I made my first attempt. The result was not perfect for sure, but it did look like a leather handbag!

One thing was very striking during my whole leathercraft learning journey.  Information about fine bag making and a modern approach on design, leathercraft and techniques were rare.

I thought about taking an apprenticeship, but there simply were no job offerings out there, because it’s a dying craft. I also learnt there are many mistakes you can make along the way – selecting the wrong leather for a specific project, purchasing the wrong tools and not knowing how to get even started.

This is how the idea of BAGS & PIECES came about.  I wanted everyone interested in this topic to get started easily and with a guarantee of success.  By simplifying the process whilst maintaining the feeling of crafting and creating something unique with your own hands and without the need to invest in a full hide of leather, expensive tools or machines.

The DIY Boxes of BAGS & PIECES include everything you need to get started crafting your own leather accessories – pre-cut and pre-pricked leather, lining and reinforcement pieces, metal accessories, tools and supplements. There is also step-by-step instruction along with video tutorials.

We offer the ultimate level of personalization to every leather accessory, where customers can select the leather structure of their choice, the color of the leather, lining and metal accessories, along with a monogramming service. Currently we offer two different products: a crossbody bag and a travel set, consisting of three leather accessories.

Could you tell us a bit about how you built your site?

I built the site myself with Wordpress and WooCommerce and used the Flatsome theme which integrates really well with WooCommerce.  The builder is very intuitive and there are a lot of pre-made templates which helped a lot.

However, when I was searching for a solution to display all the custom choices available to a customer purchasing one of our DIY Boxes and adding a monogram, I struggled a lot and spent weeks testing different plugins.  Then I found Product Add-Ons Ultimate

As the personalization option is at the heart of my products and is my biggest selling advantage, I could not compromise on the user experience when it comes to choosing your DIY box. If the step of purchasing was complicated, what would the customer then think about the crafting process?

What made you choose Product Add-Ons Ultimate?

Product Add-Ons Ultimate was literally the only plugin that did what I needed it to do.  Adding different choices and options to a product which are displayed with pictures/thumbnails can be done with other plugins. But the combination with conditional formatting, the ability to set different prices, to show and hide options based on previous choices – I could not find that with any of the other 8 plugins I tested.

I noticed that many plugins are not displayed properly on the front end – they have many options in the back end, but then don’t fit into the overall user experience of the general site. I feel this does not instill customer confidence in a new business.

Also, the possibility of showing different options in different tabs instead of listing all the fields below each other is a huge win in terms of user experience, also for mobile. It makes the purchasing process for the customer easy and structured which is super important.

Can you tell us how you use Add-Ons Ultimate?

For my best seller, the DIY Box for the Ultimate Crossbody Bag, I use the plugin to display all eight different style options a customer needs to choose before ordering.

Firstly, the customer selects a leather structure (smooth or grain leather), and based on the selection, leather colors are shown (either in grain or in smooth pictures).

What I wanted here, is for the leather colors to already show before a customer selects a leather structure – it’s important as customers always want to see the colors options at the get go. I love the conditional formatting which allows the colored thumbnails to change depending on whether a customer selects grained or smooth leather.

Customers can also select the color of the lining, the metal accessories (silver or gold) and the carrying option they want. If the customer choses to use a statement strap, different webbing styles are displayed.

In the second tab, customers can add their custom monogramming to the leather. They can choose the color of the embossing foil and their custom initials or pre-made crafty quotes.

Then, based on their selection, the different positioning options on the bag are shown. For my product, this is super important to set up with conditional formatting, as not every quote will fit every position on the bag.

For example, if a customer wants the quote “MADE BY ME” they can’t get that quote on the leather attachment piece of the statement strap because it won’t fit. If the customer choses a monogram with two initials however, the option to emboss on the strap appears.

In the third tab customers can add gift cards with custom text and gift wrapping.

It is so cool that all the options are bundled and not displayed all in one tab – that would make for a super long list and customers might not bother scrolling down to the product description.

Also, the options look great in the cart and during checkout.  The order confirmation email for the customer and our warehouse contains all the information they need to know and it’s displayed properly – that’s hugely important.

Oh…. And did I even talk about upsells yet? We all know the annoying pop up messages and upsell messages that appear when all you want to do is checkout.  I believe these can result in quite a few abandoned carts. Not the case with this plugin!

I simply included them into the different tabs of product customization. “Add a sunglasses case to your purchase of the DIY Box” which only needs to be toggled, another 12,00 Eur of revenue are added to the order.

How did you find the experience of using the plugin?

It’s so easy to set-up! The backend is super easy to navigate. I would consider myself as someone with some understanding in tech, but I have no idea at all about coding or anything like that. The documentation is super extensive and the support is really easy to approach.

To be honest, with so many customization options it takes quite some time to set up, but that’s only because my embossing options have 60 different combinations. I had a few smaller questions and specific needs in terms of front-end appearance, which all have been solved super quickly with a custom CSS, which makes a big difference for the customer navigating the front end.

Were there any features you found particularly useful?

Conditional formatting, ability to upload images as field options, displaying groups in tabs, inventory management through displaying products as options.

Can you share any results or metrics since using the plugin?

I only launched my site on October 25th 2020, but one thing is very surprising and gold for me. Typically, customers order my bestseller “The Ultimate Crossbody Bag” for 119,00 Eur, but my average order value is now about 135,00 Eur.

This is because nearly every customer adds a personal monogram, and from the stats I have for now, 30% of all customers added a sunglasses case to their bag.

Each purchase is another 11,00 Eur in revenue for me which is huge.  I already won the customer and that is the hardest part but increasing the average order value just with one click is a huge win.

What are the next steps for your business?

Having launched only in October, there are still a lot of things that need to be done. I am currently focusing on stabilizing basic processes such as buying new materials, order processing, shipping and customer service and once that’s all set, I am looking forward to spreading the word!

I will need to get more eyes in front of my business to grow, so next I will properly dive into email marketing and Pinterest. Also, I want to launch more designs next year, because my first customers already start asking for new products! Wohooo!

Is there anything else we should know?

Yes! This company is not just about handbags, but leather accessories in general. For Christmas, we are now launching a men’s collection for the DIY travel kit and some DIY belts, with super masculine leather options to choose from.

So, if any male readers get asked by the women in their life what they want as a gift for their next birthday or Christmas – this might be for you, too!

In this case study, I speak to husband and wife team Simon Roberts and Alison Reddihough of Tickled Moon, a company that creates heart-warming and fun personalised children’s books and other personalised products.

They’re using the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Ultimate plugin to create personalisable children’s books. When you purchase a book online, you can enter your child’s name to have it printed on the cover, spine and throughout the story.

You can also enter all kinds of additional personalised elements. Here’s a screenshot of the product page for The Birthday BOO!. You’ll see that you can specify all kinds of personal information that will be reflected in the story.

About Tickled Moon

The company was founded in November 2019 and initially launched with two books, The Birthday Boo and The Christmas Wrapper and since then they have introduced two more personalised books, The Joyful Adventures and The Christmas Boo.

With a background in creative endeavours (both Simon and Alison started out as actors and then filmmakers) they continue developing new ideas and have just released their first personalised calendar, featuring illustrations from all four books (credit and name-check to their wonderful illustrator Jodie Wonford).

They recently adapted The Birthday BOO so that it can be personalised for twins and are about to launch their first personalised framed print, The Family Bus.

What were the issues you were facing?

The main issues we faced were a clear and intuitive route for the customer to follow from product page through to checkout. Also, limiting the number of mistakes a customer may make (typos for example) before they commit their purchase to be immortalised in print.

We wanted a system where the customer could personalise their book but also be shown a confirmation of all their personalisation data (as they’d typed it) during the checkout process. That confirmation of their data was extremely important, we need the customer to be sure about their personalisations, check for typos or errors before they pay and commit the product to the printers.

We now have four opportunities for the customer to see, check and confirm their personalisations before we commit the order to print. The Add-Ons plugin lists all that meta-data conveniently for our customers.

Can you tell us how you are using Add-Ons Ultimate?

We use Add-Ons Ultimate to create the personalisation fields for our children’s personalised products. Each product has its own personalisation requirements such as the child’s name, birthday, family, friends and pet names, favourite food, favourite toy, etc.

Add-Ons Ultimate allows us to quickly and easily set up the individual product pages, with the relevant personalisation fields. The data from these fields are then used in our own custom plugin to merge this data with the product text and generate a full illustrated preview on the product page. The same data is then used when checkout is completed, to generate the print ready PDF files that are the submitted to the printer for production.

What was especially useful to us was the conditional logic to show/hide certain fields. For instance we have one book, The Joyful Adventures that allows the customer to add an optional number of family/friends names into the book. The conditional logic allows us to keep the personalisation form compact on the product page and only open up the required number of fields, based on how many names the customer would like to add.

We also use drop down lists of options to allow the customer to add in a child’s favourite toy or a child’s favourite food or create their own custom options.

There were many other field types that filled our requirements as well, such as Image Swatch and a Date Picker/Calendar field. The choice of other field types available in the Plugin mean that we’re pretty much covered for future personalised products.

The meta data shown to the customer in the Cart and at Checkout is particularly valuable, so that they can confirm all their personalisation choices.

How was your experience of using the plugin?

We spent a good deal of time looking around for a solution that would allow us to easily add in the personalisation form on the product page. We settled on Add-Ons Ultimate as we found it very intuitive to create the data fields. As the plugin sits neatly within the product admin section it’s very easy to customise on a per product basis.

Did you try any other solutions before Add-Ons Ultimate?

We introduced the Add-Ons plugin with a new and much improved website. Our previous solution was hard coded into our old website. Our product pages were not customisable and so we lost the opportunity to constantly update, change images and add offers into the product page.

We were also completely dependent on our web developer each time we needed to add a new product. The system worked and served its purpose in getting us live and getting our brand and products out there but wasn’t as flexible as we’d have liked. It increased time and cost into our fledgling business.

We upgraded our website and introduced the Add-Ons plugin around 6 months after we launched and taking into account all that we’d learnt. Our new website and personalisation process is now vastly more flexible and future proof.

When looking for other solutions we considered (and tried) custom form builders but this felt a little like trying to knock a square peg into a round hole. It would work but we’d need to do a lot more custom coding in the background.

What led you to choose Add-Ons Ultimate?

Specifically the number of field type options available, conditional logic, ease/speed of use and summary of the customer’s data. We also use the pop up ‘tool tips’ on each field to help the customer, without cluttering the product page.

One concern we had for third party plugins is just how actively they are developed and supported. What we liked about Plugin Republic was that there was a very active blog and a solid (and current) history of updates. I spent a great deal of time on the blog reading many articles on using the plugin to personalise products. The Pizza shop article in particular was very useful as it was closest to what we were looking for and we could see how ordering pizzas could be adapted for our own personalised children’s books!

Can you share any results or metrics since using the plugin?

It’s difficult to share exact metrics as we are such a new business and that first 6 months following launch felt very much like a trial period. We were learning much about marketing but also about how our customers used our website, how easy they found it, what problems the encountered, what issues were cropping up post-sale, etc. All this was useful information and a stepping-stone into our new system.

Ultimately the new website and Add-Ons plugin has vastly improved our backend workflow and also streamlined and improved the customer experience, reducing the inevitable typo within the order, so reducing the time we spent on customer service confirming personalisations.
